Kedah + Sleep = Heaven in Malaysia. Week4

Sunset the first night

Monday we took the boat to the other side of Malaysia, then a bus that drove to someplace 2 hours away from there. That afternoon we met the pastor, the person of which we’d be staying with. We had the rest of the day to settle in. The pastor owns 2 houses, one right behind the other so the backyards connect. They use it as their guest house. That night we were invited to join the church in a time of intercession for the election.

Tuesday morning we went to a soup kitchen that the church is connected with. Some people don’t like Kawan, but this place had even less to do. It was a challenge being there, but we made it.
In the afternoon for a few hours we went to hangout with handicap people. It’s an organization called Super Hope, people of all ages are there. As far as I know they put packets together. When we arrived the people in charge told us to do our own thing. We were expecting to help them with whatever their day normally looks like. We did everything on the spot. They had so much fun. We played musical chairs a couple times and one guy won both times. The look on his face was so beautiful. All the joy he had on his face is probably one of the best most encouraging thing I’ve seen. It’s awesome how happy we can make people even though we’re so simple.
We got a few hours off, then after dinner we went to an orphanage home. Those kids were so well behaved. They are in some incredibly good hands. A lot of the things we asked in a group they were very rehearsed. I pray they come to know Jesus as a personal friend and not just something they’ve grown up repeating.
After the orphanage some of the church’s youth came over to meet us. We had an awesome time. We introduced ourselves plus a random fact. One of the guys said that he likes to dance. We got him and Jonathan to have a dance off. It was so funny. Just a really good night.

Wednesday we had the day off because it was labour day. However, the youth asked us to hangout with them. In the morning we went and played sports. We went out for lunch and got to try fish head curry. It was incredible. Odd how they do it. But you just put your fork into a piece of the fish and eat it. We also got some sort of chicken thing. Some squid dish and a few other things. It was an incredible meal.

Thursday we did the same things as Tuesday.

Friday morning we unexpectedly got taken out to a Chinese breakfast place. My first thought was North American food. Then I remembered I’m in Malaysia. I had no idea what to expect. There was a lot of pork and interesting things. Can’t tell you want all of it was, but it was so good.
We went to encourage a kids event at the church. There was a limbo competition. It was so awesome to see how excited these kids were to be there. They were completely involved.
Friday afternoon there was youth group, which we were encouraged to lead at the beginning of the week. They were so much fun to be with.
And finally, we left to go back to Penang.

It’s so weird how different sleep is in these two places. I’ll be curious for future trips and how that will turn out. Still sleep here is like a chore. Though we were busy in Kedah, I at least felt so much more rested there.
